Handmade Miao Batik Wax Knife

Handmade by Ms. Yang in Paimo Village, Guizhou, this wax knife is used to draw patterns on cloth before indigo dyeing. Its copper head carries the melted wax, while the bamboo handle is wrapped with cotton thread at the grip. Choose a small head for fine details, or explore different line widths with the three-piece set.

Choose your size

  • Small: for fine details and narrow lines.
  • Medium: for everyday pattern work.
  • Large: for borders and broader strokes.
  • Three-piece set: one of each size, for switching between detail and broader work.

Overall length: approximately 14.5cm. Small variations may occur because each wax knife is handmade.

Made for drawing with wax

In Miao batik, patterns are drawn with wax before the cloth is dyed. The wax knife carries the melted wax onto the fabric; line width depends on the tool, wax temperature and movement of your hand.
